He was hit in the head, by a bullet, likely coming from nearby celebratory New Year’s Eve gunfire. The bullet came millimeters from ending his life.  This practice is common in low-income areas, and poses a serious threat to civilians in nearby areas. The bill he is introducing will make shooting a gun recklessly, without a reasonable target, to be a class A misdemeanor. Felony charges will follow if someone is hit by a bullet. There are many gun laws in Texas, many designed to protect gun owners. Keep reading below to learn more about them.

Get to Know These Gun Laws

What is open carry: Texas open carry laws were enacted in 2016, allowing citizens to carry handguns as long as you have a license to carry issued by the state. Overall, Texas is very open to gun ownership as long as you are 21, a state resident, and haven’t been convicted of a class A misdemeanor or felony.

What guns are illegal? Machine guns, guns with silencers, sawed-off shotguns, armor piercing bullets, and explosive weapons are illegal. However, assault rifles, shotguns, and handguns are legal to have in Texas.

How do I apply for an open carry? You can apply online for an open carry, and schedule an appointment to be fingerprinted. You will have to do a 6-hour classroom training session, a proficiency exam, and a written exam administered by the state. If you meet the requirements, you can expect your permit to come in 60 days.

You Have Rights as a Gun Owner
